Peace and Sport Council of Afghanistan Awards 2025 Peace Prize to Veteran Diplomat Aziz Omar
The Peace and Sport Council of Afghanistan has announced Mr. Aziz Omar as the recipient of the 2025 Afghanistan Peace Prize, recognizing his decades-long commitment to diplomacy, reconciliation, and global peacebuilding.
Mr. Omar, widely respected for his international service, currently serves as the Honored Ambassador of the Peace Council in Poland and Ambassador of Reconciliation for Immigrants in Paris. With more than 26 years of diplomatic experience, including 20 years in senior leadership roles within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan, he has played a pivotal role in advancing Afghanistan’s voice in major international forums.
A Distinguished Career in International Diplomacy
Throughout his career, Mr. Omar has held several key positions, including:
• Acting Ambassador, Embassy of Afghanistan in Astana, Kazakhstan (2020–2024)
• Acting Ambassador & Permanent Representative, Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to the United Nations in Geneva (2015–2016)
• Director General of Economic Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2013–2015)
• Co-founder, Afghanistan Council of Ambassadors Abroad (2001–2024)
His diplomatic efforts span multilateral negotiations, economic and regional cooperation, international law, and UN engagement. He has contributed to several landmark initiatives, including Afghanistan’s WTO accession, the CASA-1000 regional energy project, and national reforms in anti-corruption, migration, and sustainable development.
Advocate for Human Rights and Accountability
Following Afghanistan’s political transition in 2021, Mr. Omar took on an expanded global role advocating for human rights, international accountability, and the establishment of an independent monitoring mechanism for Afghanistan. His continued engagement has made him a prominent voice for Afghan communities and displaced populations around the world.
